Yesterday, I put on pants and went Adventuring.
It’s the first time I’ve been Adventuring since this whole Make All The Books™ obsession started and I became a weirdly-focused boring nerd what only makes five bazillion glue-sticked page masters1.
Both of the major adventures of the day were for other things with which I’ve been mildly obsessed:
I went to a rock show. And not the kind involving bands and mosh pits or whatever you kids are doing at shows these days. I mean the kind with actual rocks.
Then I went to steal dirt from the side of the road. The dirt nearest me has too much loam in it, thanks to being here in the middle of a forest and all. So I drove about half an hour toward the coast to some roadsides covered in particular dirt that I hunted down on Google Earth, because god help the person who gets between me and my obsessions, even if that person is me or, y’know, my sleep schedule2.
This is because the aforementioned obsessions are lapidary stuff3 and wild clay4. Thus, rock shows and stealing hopefully clay-rich soil that I’m currently soaking in a bucket of water to let the suspended clay sink to the bottom so I can use it to MAKE THINGS5.
Which leads me to the whole reason I sat down to pen a note to y’all this morning:
I have lots of pictures from the show that I want to share, but my stupid phone is being stupid and won’t download them like normal6. Once I figure it out, I’ll be less texty and more shiny with my reporting. It was an interesting day.
(All of that preamble up there, and my actual intended note is like three sentences long. sigh. It’s on brand, though.)
Hope y’all had a fan-freaking-tastic weekend.
I’m home alone until early October, so if my notes from here on out start to get weird, it’s because I’m finally going fully feral.
Send raw meat and a muzzle.
Trust me, it’s boring from the outside. It’s the same thing over and over and over. It’s completely thrilling to me, but I’m pretty sure y’all would fall instantly asleep. A video of it would probably be pegged by the FDA as some kind of neo-Ambien-like sleep aid, so I’ve refrained. You’re welcome.
Or lack thereof, as the case may be.
one of the very few artsy/craftsy things I haven’t tried and watching rockhounding videos on Youtube comprises like 35% of my day.
Much of the other 65% of my time is watching primitive kiln-building and traditional handbuilding pottery videos on Youtube. I’m aware that my Nerd is showing here.
I have no idea what THINGS I might make. I just want to make pottery clay from actual dirt. And yes, I know that ALL pottery clay is actual dirt, but I want pottery clay from LOCAL dirt, thankyouverymuch.
Perhaps my next obsession should be “learning to fix rogue tech”, but that starts veering toward Terminator-style potential badassery, and there’s no way I can do as many pull-ups as Linda Blair.
I definitely would like to see at least pictures of glue-sticked masters, if not a video.
My kind of rock show! And yep, I've collected wild clay and made a few things. Very cool!
